Makaimura: Capcom Classic Famicom Title

Makaimura, known internationally as Ghosts ’n Goblins, is a legendary side-scrolling fantasy arcade conversion ported to the Famicom by Capcom. Famous for punishing difficulty and tight jump physics, Ghosts ’n Goblins casts knight Arthur on a quest to rescue the kidnapped princess from demonic underworld forces. The title’s brutal challenge, creative monster design and iconic soundtrack secured lasting fame and spawned a long-running Capcom franchise.

Arthur travels rightward across graveyards, haunted forests and ruined demon castles. He begins equipped with a lance that can be thrown forward to defeat zombies, ghosts, goblins and other infernal creatures. Taking a single enemy hit strips away armour, leaving Arthur in vulnerable underwear; a second strike costs a life. Collectible alternative weapons including torches, daggers and axes can replace the lance, each with unique trajectory and damage properties.

Every stage ends with a powerful demonic boss. After clearing the full six-stage campaign, players must complete the entire journey a second time on harder difficulty to witness the genuine ending, a famous design choice that demanded extreme persistence from participants. Enemy movement patterns grow faster and more unpredictable on the repeat playthrough.

Capcom’s Famicom port faithfully reproduced arcade jump gravity, weapon trajectory and enemy spawn logic. Gothic horror-themed backdrops and grotesque monster sprites establish consistent macabre atmosphere. The instantly recognisable graveyard stage theme remains one of Capcom’s most celebrated musical compositions from the 1980s.

Strategically, mastery demands precise jump measurement and enemy pattern memorisation. Impulsive forward progress leads to constant one-hit deaths. Veterans learn to engage foes at safe range and anticipate monster spawn positions many screen frames in advance.

Culturally, Ghosts ’n Goblins became synonymous with hardcore old-school challenge. Its unforgiving rules set a benchmark for demanding platform action games that developers referenced for decades afterward. For contemporary Famicom retro collectors, Capcom’s Makaimura port is irreplaceable arcade heritage software and mandatory for anyone researching classic difficult side-scrolling action design.
