Ikari, known internationally as Ikari Warriors, is an overhead military run-and-gun arcade conversion ported to the Famicom by K Amusement Leasing. Players control two elite soldiers fighting deep behind enemy lines, battling infantry, tanks and artillery across continuous battlefield terrain. Supporting simultaneous two-player cooperative gameplay, Ikari Warriors pioneered diagonal eight-way aiming for overhead combat titles and established a blueprint for military squad action that would influence countless later run-and-gun productions.

Combat unfolds on large scrolling overhead battlefields. Soldiers can move in eight directions and fire projectiles in any diagonal orientation, a revolutionary feature for overhead shooters of the era. Players start armed with rifles and can capture abandoned heavy weaponry including machine guns, rocket launchers and grenades. Enemy forces consist of patrolling infantry, armoured trucks, stationary gun turrets and powerful tank units that sustain heavy damage before destruction.

Simultaneous two-player co-op lets both warriors advance together, coordinating covering fire to survive large enemy assaults. Ammunition for heavy weapons is finite, forcing careful conservation. As players progress deeper into occupied territory, enemy unit density increases and coordinated ambushes become far more frequent.

The Famicom port replicated eight-way aiming logic, vehicle capture mechanics and enemy spawn behaviour. Wartime jungle and village battlefield backdrops maintain clear visual separation between friendly soldiers and incoming hostile units. Tense military combat background music sustains constant battlefield pressure throughout every mission run.

Strategically, successful survival prioritises capturing heavy weapons before engaging tank formations. Wasting rocket ammunition on scattered infantry leaves the squad vulnerable to armoured assaults in later battlefield sectors.
