Gunhed

Gunhed is a sci-fi vertical-scrolling shoot 'em up developed by Hudson Soft and Compile, released for the PC Engine in Japan on July 7, 1989, and later in North America for the TurboGrafx-16. It is a reskin of the game "Blazing Lazers," featuring a fast-paced, action-packed experience where you pilot the "Gunhed Advanced Star Fighter" to defend the galaxy from the Dark Squadron armada.

The gameplay is classic Compile-style shooting, with a wide array of weapons and power-ups that can be upgraded to devastating effect. The vertical scrolling is relentless, and the game is known for its impressive visual effects, including large bosses and detailed backgrounds that showcase the PC Engine's capabilities. The game's design encourages aggressive play and rewards skilled dodging.

A unique feature is the game's connection to the Japanese film of the same name, although this is primarily referenced in the Japanese version. The North American release, as "Blazing Lazers," became a well-regarded title for the TurboGrafx-16, known for its balanced difficulty and addictive gameplay loop. Gunhed later saw re-releases on the Wii's Virtual Console and PlayStation Network.

The music, composed for the PC Engine version, is a high-energy electronic soundtrack that complements the game's fast-paced action. Gunhed stands as a testament to the quality of early shooters on the system and remains a favorite among retro gaming enthusiasts.
