Family Mahjong II Shanhai e no Michi: Namco Classic Famicom Title

Family Mahjong II Road to Shanghai is a Japanese mahjong simulation published by Namco for the Famicom, sequel to the original Family Mahjong. The title features a story campaign where the protagonist competes in mahjong tournaments across numerous regions toward the championship in Shanghai. Full riichi mahjong rules are implemented, alongside adjustable AI opponents and alternating two-player versus play.

Matches follow standard riichi mahjong regulations including pon, chi, kan, riichi and dora mechanics. Story mode progresses through ranked tournament tiers against increasingly skilled rival NPCs. Free play mode enables casual matches against AI or another human participant.

Handicap options balance contests between players of unequal skill levels. Simple reference menus explain yaku combinations for newer mahjong participants.

Namco’s clean tile interface displays hands and discard piles clearly. Calm, unobtrusive background music avoids disrupting strategic tile selection and discard decision-making.

Strategically, consistent tournament advancement balances aggressive yaku building and safe discard selection. Overly risky play creates frequent deal-in losses against opponents waiting on winning hands.

For contemporary Famicom retro mahjong sim collectors, Family Mahjong II is a flagship Namco riichi mahjong curio, distinguished by its cross-regional tournament narrative spanning all the way to Shanghai.
